Meaning of Taqwa:
Taqwa is perhaps the most important concept of Islam. It is mentioned many times in Quran and Sunnah and emphasis is made on its significance. The word taqwa is derived from 239 verses of Quran. It is one of the unique words in Arabic language that cannot be translated into English. The literal meaning of Taqwa is to protect. This protection refers to staying away from the things that Allah forbids. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) has also emphasized on its importance. The significance of Taqwa cannot be ignored once you get to know that it provides the key that leads to happy and successful life in this world and in the hereafter.
Taqwa is just like you are passing through the narrow path that has thorny bushes on both sides and a person is trying his level best for saving his clothes from all these thorns. These thorns are the sin, while the clothes are Eman of that person. Taqwa means fear and forbearance. But Taqwa in Islamic terminology has very different meaning. It is a high state of heart that develops a thought in the mind of a person that Almighty Allah is one and he is the only Lord of this world. This thought also motivates a person to perform right deeds and avoid those which are forbidden.
The essence of Taqwa is that a person must make a shield against the anger of Allah and punishment. This shield refers to obeying his commandments and abstaining from his punishment. As Almighty Allah says in Quran:
"O you who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah, as you should have of Him and do not die except as Muslims"
Surah Aal-Imraan (3): 102

Taqwa is a mean by which a believer can get on to the path of performing right deeds. Taqwa also results in the acceptance of these deeds by Allah.
